Meklet v0.4.34: Prolog
Actually, the new Meklet update should be released already in the middle of November, but there were a lot of spontaneous developments and cooperations, which I could not foresee before. For example, an acquaintance from my training period as a software developer has joined the Meklet project. This leads to the fact that I have to step out of my compfy-zone to face, also critical, questions. In addition, I now have to explain my project to other people and I can't just pi by thumb it in my head. That presents me with a whole new set of challenges. It's all turning out better than expected right now. In the future I will name my updates after rock classics. The first one is Guns and Roses with November Rain. That fits quite well with the gloomy mood in the world right now, but I don't let myself get carried away by it.

Meklet v0.4.34: Developer talk
- Actually I wanted to add an icon, like a magnifying glass to the search boxes, but on the iPhone Apple does that all by itself. On macOS apparently not. This would be something I would like to see Apple developers do for macOS.
- What many visitors of my website don't see right now is that the Meklet development and the updates are running quite slow. This is due to the fact that I do not have internet yet. First I have to wait for the electricity and heating costs and then I can order the new router. That can take two to three months until the Telekom has installed my router, because that takes so long in Germany. Until then I am on a mobile contract with my former roommate and have only 64Kb/s. In 1996 I had more with my shitty 65K modem. Germany needs to work more than its digital development because this is really bad here if you want to exist as a startup. At the moment I can only read super fast or minimalistic web 1.0 websites ( e.g. Knuspermagier and Fefes Blog ) every day. All other websites don't load at all or just take way too long. I read since three months almost no news anymore. Only some small bits and bytes which are recognizable from the context. That's why I try to keep my own project as minimalistic as possible. Starbucks or other WLAN hot-spots are either too expensive or too slow to work reasonably. Twice a week I can work on the project in a community center in my city, which works at least averagely well.
- So far my focus is on websites in English. Yes, there are other languages, but I don't speak most of them. I will also only use the Latin alphabet for now, because three major language areas have excluded themselves from my project with their characters for a few months now. For reasons.
- Even though I don't want to advertise Meklet, I want to push the project a bit. I have found a pleasant way for me to get the word out but at the same time not flood people with spam. I put the link of the project in my email signature. That way my friends, acquaintances and work contacts will see it and maybe even click on the link. This is, in my personal opinion, an unobtrusive form of advertising. And it seems to work quite well.
- TIL: I have learned that the daily statistics tell me nothing and I can not read out a reliable interpretation for the project. I have the suspicion that statistics only really make much sense after a project, when you have more data points that you can link to the statistics. Now it looks more like economic fairground fortune teller glass ball reading. If there is an update I can understand why there is an increase, but the other increasing hits are in a digital fog.
- I have been more involved with the different Apple systems and trying to make Meklet more usable. For this I have created a small blog article. At the moment I can't do this for Linux or Windows. If you want to have something there, you have to hack it yourself and publish it. If you send me a mail about your project, I can link it here or take a closer look.
- I took the trouble and created a logo or favicon in Inkscape. So the project should be better recognized by users. This is now only a placeholder and does not look good yet. Unfortunately I am not a logo designer and have to read up on the subject. But it should remind me that I do not forget what can happen quickly in a project when it becomes more complex.
- A friend of mine said that this would be better if the search boxes had tooltips. He understands my basic idea to show the domain, so that people who know this domain can search for it faster within the website. But it is also good to show tooltips with the name of the website, because some domains are cryptic and don't allow any conclusions about what kind of website it could be. I'm sure you understand what I meant, even if I expressed myself a bit awkwardly.
- I have decided to change the license from MIT to a commercial copyright. There are several reasons for this, which I discussed at length with several people beforehand. I listened carefully to all the pros and cons and then made a decision. So far, I had always published everything open source and I still think that's good. No question about it. Open Source has a lot of advantages (and disadvantages) which I will not go into here. Each person must please form their own opinion. Fact is. I have to pay rent for me and my cat. Electricity, heating and food have become much more expensive and even though it's not easy for me, I want to earn money with the Meklet project. This may bother some people and I respect that, but the alternative would be to do a 9-2-5 job that I don't like and then develop Meklet in my spare time. The job market in Germany is very tight and moving massively. It's all incredibly uncomfortable. In addition, a Corona wave is spreading across the entire northern hemisphere of the earth right now, which goes hand in hand with an influenza and an RSV wave. Unfortunately, very few companies in Germany want to give a home office job. I'm sorry, but as a Millenial, I'm no longer part of the generation that goes the last mile with my corporation. My parents, the Boomer gen, did that. I won't. Therefore, there will be advertising here in the future. How this will be implemented into the existing project, I'm still working out. But this will take a few weeks. Maybe the Meklet project will be completely rebuilt. There is already a rough plan for that as well. I have a lot of risks to take right now and have to compensate for the risk of not having enough money by making tactical changes. If it will get another license later I can't say yet, but I still keep the open source door open.
- Something I wanted all along was a foldable content without JavaScript. I found the Accordion function in Bootstrap great and the project did not become such a long website. An acquaintance, thought that this would work without JavaScript and worked with me on the code. After two days of hacking, this could be implemented in the previous code.
- There are two CSS now. Once Irmgard, which is developed for the Meklet project and once Fritz (named after my grandpa), which is used for the blog articles. I have noticed in the last few days that both are developing in two completely different directions and since I prefer to keep everything clear and minimal, I prefer to separate them now before it becomes too cumbersome and complex later.
- TIL: I learned that I don't need quotes in
input[type=search]
. My friend found this out when he looked at my code to work on it. He didn't know that either and he only noticed because I was overtired and used '
instead of "
but both are not necessary.
- I've taken the Social Networks section out of the search completely for now, because there's Internet drama in too many places for me right now. I will include some entries from the category again in the future, but then place them in other categories, which I will gradually work out.
